PTL

I had dinner tonight with an old friend.  After I finished telling him all the things that are going on in my life, he summed it up by saying, “so thing’s are going well for you right now.”

I never really thought of it in those terms, but all in all, I’d agree with that.  I tend to spend a lot more time dwelling on the negatives, but sometimes I need to take a step back and count my blessings.  God is good.

Heart of a Champion

“I’m not fading into the shadows, if that’s what you’re asking. I’m not going anywhere. We’re not going anywhere. It’s not like when the Bulls beat the Pistons and they disappeared forever. I’m not going for that shit. Come hell or high water, we’re going to be there again.” - Kobe Bryant

I’ve been asked many times why I like Kobe so much.  This is why.

Coach Bryant

  • Tim: He needs to retire, settle down, focus on his family.
  • Me: He's gonna be a coach one day
  • Tim: Really? His game plan is gonna be give it to the best guy and have him shoot.

Interesting article.

Amazing Video.  Maybe I’ll attend there one day; one can hope.

I had a strong bias in favor of Russian scientists; many can be put to active use as chess coaches. In addition, they are extremely helpful in the interview process. When MBAs apply for positions, they frequently boast “advanced” chess skills on their resumes. MBAs, typically, can interpret their superficial knowledge of the rules of the game into ‘expertise.’ We used to verfiy the accuracy of claims of chess expertise by pulling a chess set out of a drawer and telling the student, now turning pale: ‘Yuri will have a word with you.’

Basketball is not who I am; it’s what I do. Christ is who I am.

Kobe Bryant at age 11 guarding a large man in an exhibition game in Italy.“There are certain kinds of people that are purely driven. I can tell who they are simply by looking at them. I have faced so much criticism for my drive that at times it has alienated me from the majority: the people who are comfortable with second place, the people who hate against me because I am not. You know these kinds of people; they are the ones who fear winning, the jealous ones who envy and try to sabotage. They are the people who have been telling me I couldn’t win all my life. Many times my drive to succeed has put me on an island all by myself because no one understood me, or they chose to misunderstand me. They chose to portray me as being something that I was not. I have learned that it is OK for me to be me, and what being me entails. It means that I will not rest; I will not sleep, relax, relent or be satisfied until my goals have been met, the challenges answered and my doubters silenced. I will not give in to my foes; I won’t let down my teammates. I won’t stop inspiring those who look up to me or stop giving motivation to those who motivate me. I will not back off until I’m back on top, back in the place where they say I could never be again.” — Kobe Bryant

In the past week:
- Orpheus Chamber Orchestra concert at Carnegie Hall
- Avenue Q off-Broadway performance
- Julliard visit (absolutely beautiful school with tremendously talented and motivated students)

Unintended perk of being in NY: gaining an appreciation for the fine arts.
